Rex Has Returned To His Relto

Well, sadly, vacation and trip time is over. Looks like the Bahro had a party in my Relto Hut while I was away! The least they could do would be to clean-up after themselves!! Work, of course, is an utter nightmare, maybe the Bahro have been there too! So glad that I have been able to get into the cavern while I was on vacation, it was a busy place right after Mysterium; hope it stays that way.

Cats has continued his journey, only have a few photos but will probably post them at the forum when I get them sorted out!!

Shorah!

Nonie and I made it home safe and sound. We had a great time meeting everyone and baking in Chicago!!
On Monday, we went to the Museum of Science and Technology, then found a really great fountain, no Ural though, and came back to have dinner in our rather quiet room (Rex and Alyi had left).

We got up Tuesday morning and watched the shuttle launch on TV --- YEA!!!!

Rode the subway back to the airport for an uneventful trip back home. Delta damaged my luggage, I'll send it off for them to fix (yeah, right).

Anyway, thanks to everyone that worked to make this MYSTerium possible and the success that it was. I am looking forward to next year's. Also thanks to GoG for hosting this blog.

Now I am off to go try and post a few pictures of things not yet posted.

See you in the Cavern...

Finally home

Here it is July 26th and am finally home. Our planned one night stay at daughters house extended into an extra day as her babysitter was sick so Granny and Grandpa babysat for them. Then today we got on the road at 8 am got into our house about aboaut 4 pm. We had stopped at a few stores on the way to pick up food, of course, the main thing on our mind.

So we started unloading the car and suitcases and then I had to go look at all my animals, and give horses big hugs. And the pager went off. So in about 20 minutes I was on my way again out of town on a transfer. Short one was back home in 6 1/2 hours. All the way there and back talked about everyone at Myst (after I explained what Myst is) and all the friends I met and what a great time was had. About the presentations and how awesome they were. Have to show daughter in law pictures tomorrow.

Tomorrow hope to be able to figure out how to do the pictures, not sure if I have any good ones but will try and weed out the bad ones. umm wonder if there will be any left to post. well we will see.

So glad Ayli finally made it home and Rex is vacationing and I hope GW and Mrs GW made it home ok. Also hope everyone has arrived to their homes safe and sound.

Granny hugssssss to everyone.

Home Safe and Sound

Well, all I can say is I'm glad we didn't have to wait around any airport for 11 hours like poor Ayli! Our time at Mysterium ended on Sunday morning when we came down for breakfast at about 8:15am. We waited around in the lobby to see who else might be ready for breakfast, and to say goodbye to those who were leaving to go play Frisbee Golf and to those who were leaving the hotel before us to head homeward. I finally managed to find Cats, who had been hiding somewhere in my luggage for the past 10 days, and he accompanied us down to hang out with the gang. When enough hungry people had gathered we (including Cats) headed to the dining room for one last meal with the "Breakfast Club" (as in the forums here, food seems to be the one constant at Mysterium as well!) although being a "cat on a stick" sitting on the dining table seemed to make Cats a little nervous. After breakfast we said our final goodbyes to everyone, and left Cats with Rex to usher him around to the sights that he had missed while he was lost in my luggage.

Our drive homeward was relatively uneventful, except for some roadwork along the way, which added a few hours here and there. We stayed overnight with my sister in Ohio (didn't arrive there til nearly 7pm) and then late Monday morning headed on our way, arriving back home here in New Jersey on Monday night.

It was wonderful to see all our old friends again, and to meet new ones, and hopefully we'll be able to do this again next year! Hugs to everyone, and a big thanks to Tijara and Tech for setting up the blog site again, and a special big thanks to Scraper and the Mysterium Committee for providing us the opportunity to meet "out of cavern" and in person with all the wonderful people who attended!

Oh, and devon still has some notes and pictures to post yet, hopefully this evening!

Trip home

July 26/2005

This is my second entry, as I couldn't pry the computer time from Rex. He was always either IM'ing or writing the blog. I did manage to say a few hi's though smile

I'm finally home, but not without a little-bit of "adventure". So here it is. Sorry it might be a little long and of the ranty nature.

Monday started very well. GW, Nonie, Rex and me met at 9am for breakfast and had a final reminiscence of Mysterium, as Rex and me were about to leave to our next destinations — me home, and Rex to continue his vacation.

My flight was scheduled to leave O'Hara at 3:30pm. Rex graciously offered (well, I nicely asked) to drive me to the airport. We said our goodbyes to GW and Nonie and headed to the airport. Rex's new Jeep took us on the road and Rex didn't have any problems finding his way. We arrived there at around 12 noon, when a big thunder storm started.

With big hugs, I said good bye to Rex and he disappeared into the rain. I headed to the terminal to check-in my luggage and while going through self check-in, I noticed that my itinerary and what was on the screen didn't match. After closer examination of what was written I realized that my flight was canceled and I was reassigned to the next flight, which suppose to leave at 5pm...

Over & Out

Well, it's done, I've made it to Grand Rapids to continue my vacation. Got Ayli to the airport, painless trip. Poor Ayli, as I write this, is still at the airport. Her 3:30 flight was cancelled and the stand-by flight was over booked. She is hoping to get on a 6:30 flight...

I may be getting a letter from the state of Illinois... sad I somehow ended up in the wrong que at a toll plaza and went though a Speed Pass slot... Oops, Now what, ARGH!! I couldn't back up and change lanes!!!

Well, I had a GREAT time! I am so glad work 'worked' out so that I could make it and that friends poked and prodded and made sure I made the right decission.

I'll be working on getting the remaining photos posted to the forum and see if I can get them to the blog gallery, not the blog page. shock

Shorah good friends, until 2006, hope to see you in the cavern. Don't forget to stay tuned for the continuing D'Olympic events!! (shamless plug...)

Rex

Edit: It is now 8:30 PM, poor Ayli is STILL stuck at O'Hare! At least she is in a plane but they aren't being allowed to leave the gate because of a current storm... sad

Shorah,

Well, I blogged last night, but the wireless at the hotel ate it. So here we are sitting at breakfast watching it rain. We are not going get very far walking today it this keeps up.

Rex and Ayli will be leaving soon. Rex is dropping Ayli off at the airport and then he is heading south. Nonie and I will be trying to visit a few more museums. We tried the /museum command but it didn't work.

I made CDs of all our pictures last night so Ayli and Rex now have all the pictures, so not telling what you will get to see!!!!!

We have had a great time. I will post some pictures when we get back, I can't see to be able to upload to my ftp site from here????

More later....

P.S. Rex had pancakes for breakfast, Ayli had pancakes, as did I, and Nonie had oatmeal. Rex wanted me to add this.

Bye.

A day of heat and less walking!

Well, Golden Wedge, Nonie, Ayli, Cats and Rex had quite a day! Got smart today and took taxi's to locations... ONly about $2 per person... less than train and SOOO much easier!! DUH!! Why did we not do this yesterday!! It was just like having warping abilities in RL! Enter here... exit at desired location! What magic!

Well, first stop was a ride on the SeaDog Architectural boat tour with a speed boat twist. Did a little speed boat action out on lake Michigan before hitting the canal for a tour of the buildings along the route. Of course, got wet in the first part but with the 100+ temperatures, no one was complaining! (Photo of the five of us to be posted soon...).

Next stop was the Navy Pier where we sat in the big attrium and cooled off and had ice cream. Then we hit the 'cone' store and each bought a mini 'city cone'. These, of course, will be featured in photos to come.

We then took another taxi to the John Hancock building where we checked sky deck hours then set off toward Morton's Steak House where we were to eat, stopping in stores along the way, which were rated, not on the content and quality of their merchandise, but the temperature of their interior!!

Dinner at Morton's was excellent, Cats was a pig, but I told him I would not say anything, so shhhhh! Of course, we have photos. I believe it was the first time that this fancy restaurant ever had patrons set up orange cones on the table!! Go figure!

Dinner was followed by a walk down to the John Hancock building to visit the Sky Deck. Great view of the city (no clouds, as was the case with the Sears Tower visit the first day). Watched the sun set on the 94th floor, very nice. The elevators quit so we had to walk down the 94 floors, oh wait, that's not right, they did finally get them fixed!!

Another taxi ride back to the ol' Holiday Inn where I sit here and share!!! I'll be posting photos of the days adventures ASAP.

Shorah!

edit: Slight edit the morning after!

Half way home

Hi all, after having breakfast with the group. Had to say farewell as hubby was anxious to get on the road. I am lucky I got him to wait as long as I did.

We had a good trip, no rain this time tho we did hit one area where it was 101, but most of the time it was in the 90's. Every time we stepped out of the car, the hot wind hitting in face made me want to jump back in the car.

Got to Daughters house in Minneapolis. We are now half way home. Tomorrow or Tuesday we will head for home.

Hope to see everyone and more next year at Mysterium.

Morning! Day 3

Well, somehow, it is morning already... Got a note from Robyn, he got back home safely it was a long drive though, including having someone driving on I-94, on HIS side, going the wrong direction, YIKES!!!

Dev and Mem are still here and heading down to breakfast now to eat and say so long, at least until we see each other again in the cavern...

Finally the Sears Tower!

We are leaving out early tommorow morning for our two day drive back home to New Jersey. I was getting worried that we might not get to see the Sears Tower after all, as it had started raining during our afternoon swim. While we were eating dinner at the hotel it stopped, so we headed off to the tower and got a wonderful view of Chicago at night. We were even able to spot our hotel down below and saw people swimming in the rooftop pool, so whoever was swimming at 9:15pm, we saw you! When we got back from the Tower, we were lucky enough to spot Kass, Neema, memiki, Ayli, Rex and a few others who were hanging out down in the lobby. We said our goodbyes to Kass and Neema, as we knew we'd be gone before they got back to the hotel in the morning. Hopefully we will be able to say our goodbyes to everyone else tomorrow morning before we head off. I'll post more tomorrow when we get to our next destination.

Meanwhile, devon has posted a few photos here on the blog, some people you'll recognise. When the comment function is fixed, I can add some names and descriptions.

Another Day... Poof

I can't add much to what Golden Wedge posted about the day except that we walked A LOT and we had a nice wait for dinner!! Really did get to see the city so none of us minded. Pizza was supurb, as Ken promised so from now on we expect pizza in the city from Ken, and Twinkies continuing from Golden Wedge...

I've posted more photos at the forum. Here is the address:

I also went back and added comments to the previous photos at the forum!

Bedtime... tomorrow is another day but sadly, one including departures...

edit: I noticed the ette is still up nextdoor posting here too! Should I go pound on the wall and tell her to go to bed!!

Sat July 23

Today is Sat, and we will be going home tomorrow. Am going to miss everyone. It has been so much fun.

Today we had breakfast with a small group of us. Yeah sure, as Ette said. Then we had to decide where and when we were going to go. As already been said by Golden Wedge, we did all those things. Tho I must have been on a different walk than he was on, cause mine was much further, and my wait for the pizza was longer than his.

It was good. I am not a true pizza eater so this was truly a treat. Thank you Ken for getting us there, even tho I am now 3 inches shorter. It was great of you to drag us around.

It has been a great one and met new and old friends. Looking forward to the next one, where ever it may be.

Granny hugs to all that are not here.

Golden View No. 1

Shorah everyone!!

It's Saturday evening and Nonie are finally back in our room after a looooong day touring Chicago. Lots has been posted about the presentations and Saturday morning, so I won't repeat that stufff.

We started out heading to the Shedd Aquarium which has us walking to a free trolley stop. We boarded and rode and rode and finally got to the aquarium. Nice place, lots of fish. They have a great crab exhibit going on right now. We left there around 3:00 pm and tried to decide what to do next, not such an easy task. We headed to the Navy Pier. Got there and decided to go get some pizza and decided to walk. A short walk later we arrived at Giordano's pizza where we had a short wait to eat some very good pizza. Thanks Ken!!!

We took a couple of pictures with the journey cloth, and I have tried to post them. We are having a great time and miss you all.

More later...

Day 2 report

This morning we had a nice quiet breakfast in the hotel restaurant with about 20 of our "closest friends". You should have seen us trying to figure out the finances after that! Then after a looooooong time trying to gather the troops together, 12 of us(myself, devon, the boys, Ayli, Rex, Ken, GoldenWedge, Nonie, memiki, Wolfgang and Robyn) walked awhile, rode the free trolleys awhile, and ended up at Shedd Aquarium, where we saw lots of neat stuff! Aafter that, we boarded the trolley again. That's where we parted ways. devon, the boys and I headed back to the hotel where we are now getting ready to go for a swim, while we left the rest of the group waiting for a trolley to the Navy Pier and ultimately, food! More later!

Oh What A Day

Wow, what a day, in every way. First I barely caught my train into Chicago, but I made it so it was all good. Then I got calls from Golden Wedge and Ayli on the trains and it was excellent to finally hear some voices; I was getting sick of hearing Rex all the time grin. Didn't expect GW to have such a deep voice either smile.

So anywho, after a long walk with the sun in my eyes I finally made it to the hotel and realized I had no idea how to find people. Luckily, Devonette and L'orr were standing around in their Greeter shirts and I quickly found myself crammed into an elevator with lots of people on my way up to get my name ironed onto my shirt. Plus I had to unload the 40 twinkies I had managed to stuff in my bookbag for GW.

Presentation night went well, but there are other entries on that.

The way home however was not so smooth. Missed my train because I was on the wrong platform and had to wait for another, and naturally my mother was none too happy with me. My only consolation is that she has done it too.

Tomorrow should be a fun day, with lots of sightseeing and food (yes food, what else would I be talking about?). I might have my cousin with me if he still wants to come as he couldn't make it tonight (I have to call him early in the morning to tell him what time the train is leaving). Shorah until later!

2nd Day

It is Friday, and the day that the rest of us are due here. So excited to see everyone.
Hubby and I met Ayli in the lobby for Breakfast, and then we went and sat in lobby waiting
everyone else to come down. Slowly everyone came down and about 10 am the group
left for the Sears Tower.

Ayli, got a call from Rex that he was downstairs of the tower and we told him to hurry up.
It was so good to finally get to see Rex in person.

Not much to tell except what everyone one said above. The presentations were good as usual.
So no use repeating. We put in our names for a drawing. I put my husbands name in, making
a remark, that he will probably win, cause I don't win anything but he does. So lo and behold
guess whose name got drawn, yeah my husbands. I won a Riven box, a nice wood box with
pictures of Riven on it.

My husband is getting a good rest staying in hotel room playing on laptop. He tried sitting
with us but all the gaming talk, kind of blew his mind.

Spent evening in Ayli room with Rex, Golden Wedge and his wife. Now it is almost midnight
and time for me to get some sleep.

hugsss Mem/Granny

Our 1st day at Mysterium

Okay, I've stolen the computer back from devon for a little bit (he'll get back to his notes from the presentation shortly) to tell a little about our afternoon/evening here. After we settled in and went back down to the lobby we were warmly greeted by Kha'tie and we met up with G'ildor, Neema, Kass, memiki, Ayli, Rex, Ken, L'orr and a whole bunch of other people whose names I will never remember! At a request from Kha'tie and Scraper, devon had to run out to the car to snag his computer speakers (which were thoroughly taped to the car serving as speakers for the cd player, since the car speakers don't work) for the presentations. Apparently speakers for the presentations were either overlooked, or never made it, so I guess it was lucky we just happened to have ours with us! I went up to Ayli's room to help with ironing names onto Greeter shirts, and in no time at all it seemed like it was time for the presentations! Budgie's quilt presentation went over really well, even though lights still on in the room cut down on the clarity of viewing. People were in awe of Budgie's work, especially when they could see it close up in person. Golden Wedge's presentation went over really well, too, and of course my kids loved the Twinkies that were handed out! There was quite a variety in presentations, every one different and interesting in their own ways, even a clip from Cyan about Myst V, but I have to say I'm still partial to the two GoG presentations! Not sure yet what tomorrow holds. It seems that many people already saw the Sears Tower today, so we may have to strike out on our own tomorrow if we want to see it. Hopefully we'll be able to spend some time with some of our friends here before we have to leave Sunday!

Okay, looks like devon fell asleep (it's 11:20pm after all!) so I guess he'll finish posting his paraphrased notes tomorrow. I think he's got bits and pieces of the opening interview/Q&A session with Rand still left to post. Fair warning, it's not exactly accurate to what was actually said, but you get the general idea.

Good night all, more to come tomorrow!

The Day

Left the house at 4AM this morning and hit the linking book. Seems to be out of order so I hopped in the car, instead... Got in to Chicago around 11:30 and actually didn't get lost!!! Thank goodness for Mapquest!! Walked over to the Sears Tower and met Memiki and Ayli on the 103rd floor, talk about cool!! (Is that still a word?) We walked around abit then a group hit dinner. Afterwords, headed back to the hotel for the presentations, I had to change into my Cavern Ware so that others would know me!! Great presentations which you can read about here so I won't try!

Golden Wedge, Ayli, Memiki and I are sitting here yaking... well, I'm typing and they are yaking!! More later, have to try to get some pictures of the day posted!!

Presentation: D’ni Linguistic Fellowship

D’ni Linguistic Fellowship

[Introduction in D’ni]
D’ni linguists (http://linguists.bahro.com/home.html)

Letters set up at the table to try out your calligraphy
Great satisfaction in translating
Translation for the Great Shaft is an example
Only 2 sentences long but it gives great insight

The letters in a D’ni word are overlapped, the characters described as intricate. They do have an element of beauty.
The D’ni work for shaft is [D’ni word]. This is comprised of 4 symbols. You can see here where the characters overlap. These can be seen at the bottom of the Great Shaft in URU … which you can’t normally get to … [giggles from the audience]
For the past few months I’ve been getting requests to translate their name or username into a mandala. It’s something that I enjoy doing so I thought I’d offer my services.

Q – When is it applicable to use a mandala? A city name makes sense, but what about a “door”.
A – It might be used as a label. It takes less space.
A – A mandala is a very exquisite way of displaying a name. A fancy, fun way of display.
Q – Could you use them as a more immediately recognizable label? This is a Men’s Room.
A – It’s a gorgeous way to display a name.

We were talking about dictionaries. Many have shown up over the years. ??? has mounds of information.

Q – The difficulty I have with the D’ni language is that some symbols sound different.
A – It’s very straight-forward.
Q – So there are no dialects.
A – No. Most people would be from the cavern so there would be no difference. As outside people came in, differences would begin to occur.

The web-site has links to the pronunciation of each symbol. It also has diagrams and animations that will help with calligraphy.

Personal dictionary that I brought tonight is 2 years worth of work to help me with my own writing.

[Lots of talk about the D’ni language]

If nothing else, the script is a beautiful language.

This is what I typed during the presentation. Any mistakes are my inability to listen or type – Devon

Presentation: Myst inspired quilts

Myst inspired quilts

[BudgieMom via phone]

Q – How long have you been doing this?
A - My grandmother started teaching me when I was 7. That was about 50 years ago. I’ve been making the quilts since 1993.
Q – Do you have a web-site?
A – No. See the GoG web-site forums.
Q – Have you thought of having these images licensed for cards …? I work with a lot of artists.
A – No, it sounds interesting but I don’t know how that would work with the copyrighted images.
Q – Have you considered full-wall or tapestry style quilt?
A – I make wall hangings, but the bed-sized are too hard to handle. About 40x40 is about as large as I go now.

[Applause]

Presentation: Markers in URU

Markers in URU – Golden Wedge

I thought I’d pass out some Twinkies.
[Applause]

[PPT presentation with Laser Pointer]

Q - There was a bug causing people to lose their progress. Have you seen this?
A - I haven’t seen that too often. Just part of Until URU.

Q – How much load does that place on the server?
A – It seems that one copy is kept for everyone who uses it. If I update it then everyone’s quest is updated.

Q – Can someone change a game that you created?
A – Typically you can’t edit a game that you didn’t create.

Q – When in Gahreeson, when I try and jump I end up falling down. How will you get this to work with the heavy graphics load?
A – I would suggest staying away from that age if you want to make a marker quest.
Q – Even if you’re inside is that still a problem.
A – I put a marker in the rotating crack and I couldn’t pick it up.
Q – So you can’t put a marker in space
A – Correct, it has to be above solid ground.
Q – What about on the island in-between the two rotating towers
A – Yes.

Presentation: Pokemon as Myst

Devon again. This is what I typed during the presentation. Any mistakes are my inability to listen or type:

Pokemon as Myst

Characters are traditional Pokemon (Ash, Team Rocket, …)
Started in 2001. Continued into 2004-2005
Swelled up to 165 pages, 53 chapters (10 point font)
Continued working.
Finished last week.

[Reading of the first chapter by the author]

Q – Where can we read this online?
A – Not yet hosted.
[Offer to host from someone in the audience]
[clapping]
Q – How many different Pokemon?
A – About 3.
Q – Why did you choose Pokemon as the Stranger?
A – I knew about and it only made sense to try and incorporate the two.
Q – Has it occurred to you that the Squee is like a Cubone.
A –
Q – It may be too soon to ask but how about a sequel?
A – I really need to know what’s going on with Myst 5 before writing about it.
Q – So will you be making a book for each game?
A – The story is in 4 parts, one for each game.
Q – The Pokemon have innate abilities, are they used?
A – Not to spoil too much, but yes.
Q – I see there are pictures, did you draw those.
A – Actually I combined them [from other sources?].

[applause]

Beginning of Presentation

Hi.

This is Devon typing in for Devonette. I'm sitting here during the presentations adding this blog entry (I love wireless internet!) We (about 80+ in attendence) just finished having a conference call with Rand and Rawa. I tried typing up the questions and answers as they went by (two fingers flying furiously across the keyboard). After the presentations are over I'll proof what I typed with Devonette to make sure I didn't get anything wrong and then I'll post it.

GoG presentation currently playing. Audience is watching attentively.

Finally here!

After a long and entertaining drive up to Chicago this morning... we're finally here! MrM3FaN, Scouter Dave (Father of MrM3FaN) and I happened to walk into a "Greeter Hood" in the entry-way of the hotel. Along with the greeters Kha'tie (UBI) and family is here too. Kha'tie so kindly described MrM3FaN and I as some of the "Tent People" from last year.

Well presentations start in a half hour so we better head down to catch up with the program.

More to come as time goes on!

After much traffic, we are here!!!

Hi from Chicago!

After spending a leisurely morning touring the Jelly Belly Warehouse on our way down from Milwaukee, we made it to within 15 miles of Chicago by 2pm this afternoon, and then spent the next hour and a half battling traffic trying to get into the city! We've just finished bringing all our bags up to our room in the Holiday Inn (4pm), and are planning to head down to the lobby in a few minutes to see if we can spot any fellow Greeters. As we passed through the lobby I saw quite a few familiar faces I remember seeing at last year's Mysterium, but none that I know by name. Hopefully we will hook up with friends before the activities start in a couple of hours! I'll check back in with you all later!

bye for now,

Finally in Chicago

Day 01, Thursday July 21st, 2005

My 3.5 hours flight from San Jose, CA was fine. The drive from the airport took longer due to the rush hour traffic. I've got to the hotel lobby and got recognized by last year attendy. So I figured, I'm in the right place. After I got in and got settled in my room, I went down to see who else was there. Memi jumped at me with the warm hugand "there she is!!". After a small chat we went out to look for what to eat. Not much near the hotel, so we ventured into the downtown area and got close to the Sears tower.

It is scorching hot in Chicago with a lot of humidity. I've met Memi's hubby and typing this entry on her beautiful laptop. Thanks memi.

Tomorrow is a big day as we are going to meet the rest of the Greeters and participants of this Mysterium.

Hugs to all who is reading. Tune for more to come.

1st Day Arrival

Well, My husband and I made it.

We left yesterday and stayed at daughters house in Minneapolis, left the usual time my husbands likes to leave 4 am. We ran into some massive Thunderstorms, requiring him to pull off road twice. He doesn't like to drive when he can't see. smile

We got to hotel about 1 pm and ran into Ran (Jon-Michael) who I recognized and he recognized me but neither of us could remember who we were lol

Then we saw two others we both recognized but not sure who they are. he thinks the tall one is Westwind or something like that.

We had to walit an hour and half for our room. but am now in it. Waiting for husbande to chose the place we are going to eat at.

will keep you all posted if this works. I always have trouble with blogs, ok, with everything.
